PORT 2.0 Limited is a company pioneering the design and construction of new logistics facilities to meet the increasing challenges of sustainability, safety and efficiency in near shore and onshore logistics.
The Proteus container handling solution concept has been developed to allow cities, port operators, logistics companies and other interested stakeholders to reduce the societal, environmental and economic impact of continuing to build facilities based on a design model which no longer addresses the evolving needs of modern society.
The Proteus container handling solution has been designed to provide a useful tool in the decarbonization of the world’s ports and allow cities to incorporate more sustainable port operations into overall smart city design. By automating container handling, the solution will increase the volume of containers which can be handled simultaneously and reduce empty spreader and handling equipment actions. This will significantly improve the efficiency of ship loading and unloading and port logistics. The combination of an innovative gantry arm feeding containers into steel container stacks, as well as automated delivery to the next loading point, is estimated to achieve the following key efficiency gains:
1) 2 - 3 times quicker loading/unloading and up to 20 times quicker internal port-side logistics
2) 50% - 65% less space than required for current equivalent container volumes
3) save at least 100M metric tons of CO2 per year and significantly reduce other NOX harmful emissions
For port operators, the solution will allow the handling of significantly higher daily container volumes within the same surface area and without the need for significant investment in additional handling equipment. For port owners, the value of land made available as a result of deploying the solution in the world's major ports could amount to tens or even hundreds of billions of dollars and allow container handling volume expansion without the need for additional land areas to be acquired or reallocated. For container ship owners, fuel costs and harmful emissions will be reduced due to decreased idling time outside the world’s ports. The solution will be capable of deployment to both existing ports and harbours as well as newbuild projects. The positive value proposition is clear for the industry, the communities affected by port operations and, above all, the climate.
